I'd like to tell a PACO story, since I guess this can be a sort of PACO appreciation thread.
When I found irc and UT 2 or 3 years ago the only channel I played in was #tdmpickups. I had absolutely 0 interest in ig so I ignored other chans, but I'd always see him promoting #ipug pugs. But I was happy to see someone actively working so hard to get pugs filled in this community that I found, because I was very enthusiastic and naive, while most of the players I met on irc were apathetic and negative about the future of UT. So I went in #ipug, played an ictf pug, and barely managed like 20 frags.
Now, as a total noob to UT and videogames in general, I was hardly considered a valuable asset to any community. But PACO spectated the pug and pmed me on irc afterwards telling me that I did pretty good and encouraged me a lot to stick around. He'd even pm me telling me to join different things here and there, like iTDMWARs, mCTFs, etc, which made me feel like I belonged
. Such a nice gesture from someone so high up in the community, who seemed to genuinely care about so many individual players, was something I never forgot. It's the only reason I started playing ig/sdom/sa and a big part of the reason I've stuck around in the community
The unappreciative attitudes some players have had towards him are totally unbelievable and it infuriates me, but I can't say that I've never been part of the problem myself at times. I honestly assumed that everyone would respect what he's done, but this community never ceases to amaze me. One important thing that I think all of us can do is stop giving people who instigate things attention/merit. Even going through the trouble of responding to such people negatively can give them too much validation.
Can only hope that those who step up in his place share part of his wisdom, which I think speaks for itself based on how far we came. And I hope he comes back one day
Is there a hero somewhere...
