UT4 pre alpha download - 15/07/14

Hi,

Latest UT4 download as of 15th July, mouse and keyboard input are MUCH better in this build and there are some graphics options, recommend turning off stuff like post processing or setting everything to low if you're having fps issues

More maps added, some custom movement characters and also some mutators like instagib

Some commands you can use

stat fps - shows fps

open dm-mapname - open dm will bring up a list of available maps, you can then arrow up and enter on the map you want to switch to

setname myname

fov number

If you have problems opening the console, or want to change the keys from WASD you can go to

WindowsNoEditor\UnrealTournament\Saved\Config

Open the Input.ini and add this line in the top section

ConsoleKey=Tilde

You can change this to any key you like, i've just changed it to F as a test and now F opens my console

If you want to limit your FPS for any reason, like UT4 kills your grpahics card running at 400 fps ¬¬ then add

[/Script/Engine.Engine]
bSmoothFrameRate=True
SmoothedFrameRateRange=(LowerBound=(Type="ERangeBoundTypes::Inclusive",Value=22),UpperBound=(Type="ERangeBoundTypes::Exclusive",Value=120))

At the bottom of the Engine.ini in the same folder, Value=120 is the frame rate limit, 120 works fine and smooth but you can set it to whatever you like

To open a game with the custom UT characters use this command

open DM-DeepBlue_20140622?Game=DM?GoalScore=30?TimeLimit=15?Playerclass=/game/userbp/chris/ChrisCharacter.ChrisCharacter_c

Replace the map name with the map of your choice, you can see the list of maps by typing the word open in the console

Some other playclass options

?Playerclass=/game/userbp/brizz/BrizzUTCharacter.BrizzUTCharacter_c
?Playerclass=/game/restrictedassets/blueprints/wip/joe/JoeCharacter.JoeCharacter_c

UT defaults to Steve Polge's UT character, Jim and Joe and also Epic devs

They put slope dodging in, but then they broke(nerfed) it so you can only dodge and jump up steep vertical slopes, so if the slopes seem weird or broken this is why

Yeah they're getting close to full alpha, you can play this multiplayer but it's got some bugs and the player models are just placeholders from a UE4 demo, not sure how far along they getting everything else in

It needs some fixes and teaking, but it's looking ok

@ medor, think it's 64 bit only

There's an exe file under \UnrealTournament-2014-07-06\UnrealTournament\UnrealTournament\Binaries\Win64

Run that or make a shortcut of it to start the game

Looks not bad. UT3 was slightly better. It misses the double jump... really useful in some cases.
Hope they don't listen the ut99 community too much, game will end up sucky and instagibish.
Rule 30: Players won't be judged equally for breaking the same rule.

Yeah, it's pretty good. The strafing feels a bit off still, and movement speed might need to be faster. Sprinting has to go. Other than that, I don't mind it.

fun to test, managed to dodge mid air and discovered that dodging off lifts is better then a normal liftjump >.<

Every movement prototype so far has been ridiculous. Endless rapid walldodging, then boost dodging as the primary dodging movement, now sprinting and these other movements that are so stupidly op that they become replacements for the traditional ut movements.

Also, people from Epic have posted on prounreal and other dead (mostly 2k4 and ut3) communities for input, totally ignoring this forum.

I'm looking forward to the future of ut99, hopefully lead forward by PACO in the near future

Well there are some issues with movement right now, namely

Auto dodge(been there for about 2 months now) can't do left-right quickly without auto dodging

Also if you jump and then dodge before you land, you will dodge when you land, as long as too much time hasn't passed

OR if you mistime a dodge and do it too soon it will just do that dodge, but a split second later

You can also do stuff like right-jump-right next to a wall and it will walldodge

2nd issue is the capsule

The underside of the collision mesh is is round, if you hit any edge at the right angle it'll send you flying, like a reverse ramp dodge/jump

The other issue this causes is, if you jump from one box to another which you should barely be able to make with a running jump, you will make the jump if you run from the top of the box, but not the edge

The underside is round but you can still use most of the underside to stand on a flat surface

So if you jump whilst standing on the box using the bottom of the collision mesh, you jump from a higher point and make the jump, if you walk right to the edge of the box and then jump, you jump from a lower point and miss the jump...

Also boost dodging, as seen in finalz video

This is where the vertical speed from a jump or a lift is added to your dodge/walldodge, so rather than being 1300 horizontal and 500 vertical velocity it's like 1300/1200, more in the case of the lifts - so you go FLYING with the added velocity

In the previous games your vertical velocity was reset to whatever the dodge was set to, so if you dodge off of a lift it would be like dodging off a ledge

Epic have been slow to identify and fix issues like this, so i'm hoping tim can do it lol -.-

Some gimmicky stuff has been tried out and I'm hoping that it gets trimmed but the overall movement mechanics have not been bad. Room for improvement but not bad.

The future of UT99 is that I'll keep supporting tournaments as long as there is player interest but we should all be hoping for UT4 to be a success. While I love UT99, I'd love a fresh chance at a new game. This of course depends on the new game meeting good standards and being fun but my fingers are crossed.

I'm clocking out for a month but I've had some ideas and pitches to make towards Epic for the new game. If they show any interest, I don't mind putting in a lot of work and contributing.
