Question for all fellow duel monitor users

Postby csnafk » Fri Mar 07, 2014 11:16 pm

My main monitor (the one UT loads on) is a 24" Asus 144hz 1920x1080 and my second monitor is a 19or21" Asus 75hz with 1400x900. For some reason when I load UT (1024x786) it re-sizes my desktop resolution and distorts everything on the second monitor, sliding everything far right. Anyone know how to fix so it stops? All drivers are updated. Also, can't alt+tab out without UT crashing, if there's a fix for this it would be appreciated.

AFAIK the only way to achieve 144hz is at native 1920x1080 resolution so you shouldnt be running UT at 1024x768 anyway. Maybe only the desktop needs to be set at that resolution but I doubt it? Im sure someone can clarify. Also make sure you're not cloning/duplicating the display instead of extending it

Like ph34r said, make sure you are extending your desktop.
Verify that you are actually at 144hz, (force vsync and go into game).
You need the correct monitor cable, and need to be in the correct dvi port on the video card.

I can run mine at any resolution and still get 120hz, but maybe the the 144hz monitors are different?

it's still better to run on highest resolution (1920x1080) so screen doesn't look blurred and there is no input lag added from the scaling.

Resolution doesn't matter, it looks worse on non-native due to scaling and might have input lag. Make sure in your graphics card settings to let the GPU do the scaling, not the monitor - this removes any input lag at non-native res. About dual monitors, I had a similar problem when I had two, except it didn't crash when tabbing out. No idea how to fix it.

A lot of people have problems with second monitors when running UT.

It's not a solution but if you can't fix it then as a quick workaround - using the shortcut [Windows Key + P] you can quickly switch between extended monitors and single monitor display. Do this just before and just after you load UT and you'll no longer have any issues. I had to do this for years sadly because I couldn't get dual monitors to work with UT.

When I run a dual monitor setup (using ATI card/drivers @ 1920x1080 on both), my ASUS VG248 will sometimes go pure-bred stupid when loading games and kick down to 60hz to match the second monitor, but manually resetting the VG248 to 144hz*** via CCC or Win7 fixes the problem. It does get pretty tedious manually checking the monitor information in the options GUI and having to alt-tab back to the desktop to change it if it did drop, as it doesn't happen every single time. I'm pretty sure running dual vg248's you wouldn't have an issue with reso or refresh jumping around, but mixing and matching resolutions and refresh rates is probably not the greatest idea if you're looking for 24/7 functional stability.

***- Actually 120hz now, as I recently learned that running ATI cards at 144hz in Crossfire is apparently impossible without dual bridging and my cards don't have a second bridge, because ATI fucked up something fierce. But I was running a single GPU (Sapphire Dual-X 7790 1gb) with both monitors and it worked the same way.
