Is this PC ok for 1920*1080 @120hz?

Postby LoD » Tue Jan 14, 2014 1:22 pm

Hello,

I had been playing on this laptop until about 4 weeks ago:

http://www.notebookcheck.com/Dell-XPS-1 ... 944.0.html

Then I got the Benq Screen:

http://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B005XZB ... =computers

I connect to the laptop with a minidp to dp cble. The problem now is that the laptop seems not to be able to deliver 120 Hz (even not 100hz) for the Screen @ 1920*1080, which makes the investment for the screen almost obsolete. I habe tried multicore fix, newest reference driver for gpu, vsync on and off, all details down in game, but after 5 min playing i get frame losses and it is really annoying, I guess the xps graphics card is to weak for the Screen and hz!? So now im am playing with the thought to get a new desktop computer. I do not want to invest too much money. I like the following pc but do not know a lot about hardware. My aim ist be able to play mit the benq on 120 hz at 1920*1080, is the PC ok for this and do you see any weaknesses or have any tipps why not to buy it with windows 7 home premium 64 bit. Or can I even get away with a cheaper PC? Here it is:

thank you for your help!

Pretty sure you need a dual link DVI cable and a DVI out on your laptop to get 120hz. (At least I did for my ASUS).

The desktop should be fine.

if you only play UT (like me) or just old games, you don't have to invest too much and i would even recommend getting a 2nd hand PC maybe so the cost will be very low.
i have AMD2 2.2ghz cpu, 2gb memory and nvidia 250 gfx and i run UT at 144hz np without frame drops or any other problems.
if u play newer games so the PC you linked will be enough for most i guess but some games i don't think you will be able to get 144hz on highest settings with that graphic card (will probably take a monster like the TITAN GFX or one of the newest 790 series or so).

Last i checked dual link DVI, HDMI 1.4 and DP should be able to carry 120hz. I was having the impression if your graphics card can deliver 120hz, a mini dp port should be able to handle that. I'm not 100% sure the benq monitor accepts 120hz via the dp port but the dp port should be able to handle 120hz. Be careful with adapters for monitor cables, not all work with high resolutions or 120hz. Before buying a new computer, you might want to try a HDMI 1.4 cable if you can't get the dp cable to work and don't have a DVI port on your laptop.

Hello everbody and thx for the reply,

@killemall: hmm, laptop does not have dvi, so I it seems I need another pc
@dr: well, I can st everything to 120 hz but I get frame losses when playing longer than a few minutes. I am not using an adapter but a cable with mini dp one one and dp on the other end, so there should be no problems. I have tried this hdmi:
http://www.amazon.de/AmazonBasics-Hochg ... s=hdmi+1.4
This one only supports 60 hz and lower
@MP/5: as far as i know, there is no nvidia 250 gfx, do you mean gts 250 (this one is 25% faster then my laptop card)?

thank you,

I'm actually in a similar boat as you. I just ordered a mini dp to dvi dl which I read should work (waiting for it to ship). Making space for a desktop's not what I want to do so if it doesn't work, ah well.

Im not sure if mini dp to dp is the right way to do it or if even matters. I just know what I read only suggested mini dp to dvi dl when the laptop's hdmi port is not version 1.4 or above.

@dr: exactly. This is why i thought that my graphics card is not good enough or gets too hot... (but really goes on my nerves that the not too cheap laptop i have cannot handle this....)
@gambit086: would love to hear your experience with the cable being shipped!
@mp5: Also playing ut04 and cs source, but still these games are not too new... if I get a new pc it will be something 550-750 Euros i guess to be on the save side

I have had a look at the Nvidia Settings and found the following. Can that be right? Is my graphics card not working on the game or for the Benq?!:

merci everyone!

If you didn't buy a mini dp to dvi dual link adapter where there is a USB cable connected to it as well, you didn't get the right thing. Something like this: http://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-MDP2 ... +dual+link

USB needs to be connected as well to supply more power. Your monitor can support up to 120hz. I don't know much about your video card so if that can handle the higher resolution/refresh rates, you updated drivers, and your displayport has the latest version 1.2 (1.2 came out around 2009 so if what you have is newer, good chance it is), then an adapter like the 1 above is what you're looking for.

Those cables aren't cheap ($70-110 around here). Worth asking if you should make that investment, or just buy a desktop for a few hundred more. For my purposes, the adapter's worth it as I have to use my laptop for work and for conserving space. GL.

Hello,

i have installed fraps an I get about 132 fps no pretty constantly (I have choosen 120 Hz, is is normal to get more than the 120 in this case?), but only after installing an older driver for the geforce. One thing persists however, I get multiple very short and little "freezes" when doing longer jumps like doging (off a plattform), jump boots, etc. According to fraps, the fps remains constant during that time... Any ideas? It is really annoying.

regards,

LoD, you're getting 132 fps in single player because of a cpu timing thing. When you join an ACE server, and you set highperftoggle to true, you'll get the normal 120 fps.

I made a guide that could address your other issues here: viewtopic.php?f=41&t=1608 :)

If you set your refresh rate to 120, you're getting over 120 most likely because vsync is off. Anything over 120 can result in the tearing or unsmooth gameplay that you're probably describing as little freezes. If it bothers you, you can keep vsync off and place a limit on your fps ingame (need to be using a renderer that has the option to limit fps), or turn vsync on, or what rickjames said above (never tried it). Not sure what's the better option.

Vsync causes input lag and sucks in general. Tearing won't happen until you're way over the refreshrate- having fps 5-15 over the refreshrate won't cause issues. The problem is cpu timing which is fixed via ACE, like I said -_-

hello,

wow, thanks for your support! I have used this ace highperftoggle and switched to d3d9 now (vsync has always been off, thanks for the explanation), and everthing seems ok, even get 144 hz. Thanks also to inqui who gave me live support yesterday in ICQ!

PROBLEM SOLVED...

see you,
