Mouse problems

Postby ShadowFax » Fri Feb 21, 2014 8:33 am

I have been noticing since quite some time that I am not having a complete control over my mouse when I play Ut. To explain it a bit further:

If my crosshair is pointed to a certain spot on the map and if I want to do a quick 180, after I have done it the crosshair is way off, does not point to the same place. It is either way far on the right or left or too high or too low. It is the same if I am trying to quickly point my crosshair to a certain spot in the map (like the sniper tower on BrokenLimits, or spawn points in Duku), it does not point where I want it to, which makes me miss very easy shots. I also noticed this happening outside of UT as well. For example if I want to click on a Firefox icon on my Windows Toolbar I end up clicking the icon next to it. Maybe it has something to do with negative acceleration. I have it switched off in Windows settings and I also have the newest mouse fixes installed (I did try couple of them; the latest one installed is the one in RJ's quick UT setup guide). I have also tried changing my in game sensitivity. If I increase it my crosshair keeps flying all over the place, and if I decrease it I can hardly turn around. That is why I have never found a sense that I am happy and comfortable with. I have directinput unchecked. These are my mouse settings:

I am not excluding the fact that maybe I have my mouse settings wrong, because I really am an amateur when it comes to these things, or maybe there is nothing wrong with my mouse and I simply suck too much which is also an option

Thank you for your replies. :)

p.s. My mouse is Logitech MX518

Probably a carpet too dark for an optical mouse.

Try with a white sheet of paper for testing.

you can test for mouse accel by moving your mouse quickly for a certain distance, and then moving your mouse slowly for the same distance. each time start with your crosshair pointing at the same place, lined up with a doorway or something. if you have mouse accel, you will end up looking at different places.

Optical seems to work better with darker pads, preferably pure black and cloth with some texture..lasers don't really like black cloth and usually work better on harder, smoother pads ;) They will still work on a black cloth but they just seems much more accurate on a hard surface without much texture, like my desktop or a plain piece of blank printer paper. This is what I have found in testing a g400s and da2013 against a g500s, take it with a grain of salt as everyone has their own preference of what a mouse should "feel" like.

following what kud posted is pretty much one of the only ways to manually "test" for accel while in UT. There is a program that will give you a bunch of numbers in greens and reds depending on if there is positive or negative accel, but I prefer doing it by hand, in game, the way kud said ^_^

Well, I've never owned one, but it might be just that your sensitivity is too low for that MX518. It is an old mouse, so I'm guessing its sensor can't handle extremely high speeds - so if you move your mouse too fast it will "freak out" and move in random directions (including up and down). Try kud's test and move it as fast as you can first, and then at a reasonable speed, and see if it is accurate.

i think lgs software adds accel or something in the mouse to make it shitty (smoothing?? not sure), maybe try to uninstall the driver i think the mouse defaults to 800 dpi anyway.

I think they will send a G500s for free if you explain to them what happened
