weird framedrops with good computer

Postby vitz^ » Mon Dec 24, 2012 10:40 am

hi

I recently bought a new computer and Im having framedrops on ut (wich never happened before in my old computer unless for a few specific maps). The drops are really awkward because they only drop every 3-5 mins, and they drop 10 or 20 frames at once for the duration of 1 second and then they come back up.

my specs are:

p8z77-V LX
i5 3570k 3.4Ghz
Asus GTX 660 DirectCU II OC 2GB
8GB Ram
Corsair Builder Series CX600W V2 80PLUS

Windows 7 64bit

Things i've tried but without success include:

-fresh install of windows
-disable aero aswell as other windows kinky options (power management, visuals etc)
-update nvidia drivers
-disable Speedstep in BIOS,
-disable c1, c3, c6 in BIOS
-disable Turbo in BIOS
-disable EPU Power management in BIOS
-disable Multicore Enhancement in BIOS
-reset BIOS to defaults
-update BIOS
-disable useless windows services with S.M.A.R.T tool
-set UT's priority to high
-use multicore fix for UT
-use game booster to run UT
-Run UT in windows XP and windows 98 compatibility mode
-Tried all renderers possible (opengl, d3d8, d3d9)
-different ace settings
-increasing netspeed

try setting your framerate limit in your unrealtournemnt.ini to your refreshrate+5.

Make sure you save your ini after you are done and make sure you change it under the renderer heading that you are currently using (opengl, d3d).

I used to have the same problem, and it turned out to be caused by the multicore fix. The solution was to get an original, unmodified unrealtournament.exe file and run that in win xp sp2 compatibility mode. Theoretically, an original unrealtournament.exe in win xp sp2 compat mode should be the same thing as the muticore fixed unrealtournament.exe, but I can tell you that the multicore fix file was definitely the cause of my problem. If you need an original ut.exe, you can get it from chicken's install, named "unrealtournament436original.exe".

If that doesn't fix your problem, I would download some ultra high-poly maps and test to see if the frame drops occur more frequently or in greater amounts on them. Also, since I'm assuming it doesn't happen in other games, it could also be a ut.ini issue.

does it happen in all games or only ut?
no idea but i would try
-your old ram/videocard
-downclocking your videocard
-imagecfg, its a tool that alters your unrealtournament.exe to assign ut to 1 core permanently (so save your .exe if u want to try it)
it shouldnt be needed with your cpu though...at least i dont need it anymore with my 3450
but with my old intel dual core nothing helped but imagecfg to prevent cpu switching cores while playing...each switch resulted in lags

P.S. Try and use an older graphics driver. Newer ones don't work as good as older ones do with UT99

I suggested it (could be totally off base), but he has the CPU cooler that came with the chip. He might need a proper one? IvyBridge can get hot and I remember reading reviews that the coolers included are garbage.

PACO has a good point, check all your temperatures and make sure its not running too hot.

Once you get the solution pls tell me cause I had the same problem. It seems to go on and off, either I get steady 125 fps or I get 10-20 frames drops every min...

it does the same when I record a video with fraps. I suppose to have a steady 30 fps but it goes down and up sometimes ? No reason why its good and sometimes not ?

@ noobX

tried to put my old card back but for some odd reason its not recognizing my monitor... cant switch ram tho cause my old pc is still ddr2 :/

@ rickjames

that actually seems to help, dunno if its placebo but seems that the drops are not as frequent anymore. barely played today so i will need to test more.

@ jyb

game booster is a program. older version used to be better (felt more complete) but nowadays its simple and is branded by razer. google for razer game booster. wish i could make my old card work here :S

@ packo

ye i know stock cooller sux but this is ut :$... also my temperatures are fine, never pass 50c running ut ... barely passed 60c running assassins creed in highest settings too :)

@ ij

sure man

@ edge

u gota have higher standarts!

u have those framedrops in all games or only ut?
still recommend to downclock your videocard and use imagecfg to test if it has any effect ;)
since both fixed similiar problems in the past for me

intels boxed coolers are fine if u dont overclock and mind the noise (VERY loud)

I have the exact same problem like you vitz, but its only when i start ut and join a server for the first minute of a game the frames drop from 60 fps to like 20 or 10 for a sec
and i got a very good computer + graphic card . that never happened with my old crap computer

on my old processor the multicore fix didnt work, I had to right click UT.exe -> set compatability to win98

that fixed it for me

If you don't like gamebooster you could try Process tamer, very nice little tool. Very simple to

Try updating your sound drivers, and verify you have the latest info chipset drivers. You have a nice system, there is 0 need to use gameboosters and all this stuff designed for...bad computers. I wouldn't even disable Aero unless you don't like it, it actually makes videos and things play worse, I know I've had screen tearing issues on online videos whenever I've had Aero disabled, common issue and was just annoying enough for me to enable it again.

In your NVidia settings, try setting RenderAheadLimit to 1 and set it to Single Display Performance, Always OFF on the vsync setting.

What Rick said about the multicore renderer is somewhat true, but ACE forces UT to 1 core already, so there's no point in using any fixes for that unless you play on non ACE servers. I would verify that your set to highperftoggle by typing mutate ace highperftoggle in console in a server (with ace) so that it says TRUE on top, then restart UT.
<Tim> it's going to be the same speed in all gametypes <Tim> adjust your playstyle accordingly

I played Oblivion with out-dated sound drivers and when a horse stepped on pavement it would cause massive frame drops..took me a while to figure it out
